BioDirection, a privately held medical device company developing novel and rapid point-of-care products for the diagnosis and management of concussions and other acquired traumatic brain injuries, has closed a $2 million interim financing to support clinical development of the Tbit™ System, the first technology positioned to deliver a rapid and  objective point-of-care blood test for concussion diagnosis. The Tbit System uses a patented bio-nanowire technologyy to rapidly detect and accurately measure protein biomarkers that are released from the brain immediately following a head trauma.

Nanoco Group plc, a manufacturer of cadmium-free quantum dots and other nanomaterials, has announced its interim results for the six months ended 31 January 2017. The Company’s products include Cadmium Free Quantum Dots (CFQD), CFQD quantum dot films, and copper indium gallium di-selenide (CIGS)/copper indium di-selenide/sulfide (CIS) nanoparticles. Haydale Graphene Industries PLC’s US subsidiary Advanced Composite Materials LLC has signed a four year deal to supply silicon carbide micro-fibre to a global industrial tool manufacturer. Following a period of stringent testing, the Haydale SiC fiber has been approved for use in the production of SiC whisker reinforced cutting tools. There is considerable demand for SiC whisker reinforced cutting tools which are used extensively across a range of industries and more specifically, for the production, of land based turbines and jet engine fan blades. Haydale Graphene Industries has also established an Asian Graphene Research Center in Thailand Science Park in Pathum Thani.

The National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA) and the Ministry of Science and Technology, through Thailand Science Park and Haydale Graphene Industries, have signed a collaborative agreement to establish Haydale Technologies (Thailand).

Researchers from the CIIRC in India have received Rs 30 crore (~ $4.6 million) from Sringeri mutt to developi a graphene-based product that can stop bleeding in less than 90 seconds. The product could help soldiers in the field. The product is a carboxyl-linked graphene sponge (DAPGS). Masdar Institute of Science and Technology and The University of Manchester (UoM) have announced that a joint project using graphene to improve water desalination techniques has been selected for $500,000 funding from the UK. The funding is part of a project led by the UK Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy in partnership with the British Council, which aims to strengthen partnerships with research bodies and higher education institutions in the Gulf.

Germany company Bio-Lutions has received 500,000 Euros investment from DEG, the German development and investment association. These investments are available as a part of the Up-Scaling program of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development. Bio-Lutions produces biodegradable packaging and disposable tableware from plant waste, for instance bananas, pineapples or tomatoes. First the plants are dried and then mechanically pulped into micro- or nanofibers. When these fibers are mixed with water, it can be processed in various forms without the need for additional chemical binders. It can be shaped into packaging and disposables.
