University of Otago researcher Dr Carla Meledandri has won the 2017 Prime Minister’s MacDiarmid Emerging Scientist Prize in recognition of research involving the use of silver nanoparticles to treat and prevent dental disease
Dr Meledandri, a senior lecturer in the chemistry department, was presented with her $200,000 prize by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern. The funding will go towards developing silver nanoparticles to fight tooth decay and infection.
This initiative is being undertaken through a start-up company, Silventum Ltd, that she has co-founded, and a technology licensing deal with a multinational dental company.
