Nanotech key to new electronics and sensor technologies
After more than twenty years of research, we now have great control over the synthesis, properties, and manipulation of nanomaterials. They are being integrated into daily lives and their importance will increase as miniaturization becomes more important in areas such as electronics, sensors, energy and biomedicine.
Nanotechnology and nanomaterials are allowing for the improvement of functional characteristics of existing materials and products, as well as for the creation of radically new solutions to market and consumer demands. The most interesting applications and those that promise the greatest economic return are in integrated sensor and electronics technologies for flexible touchscreens, printable and wearable electronics and remote healthcare monitoring. These technology areas will have a huge impact on industrial manufacturing and healthcare in the next decade and nanomaterials such as graphene are key to their future development.
In this issue we examine the impact of nanotechnology in the growing market for automotive touchscreens and haptic technologies and in wearable “e-skin” monitoring devices. Another market that is witnessing growth is nanodiamonds. We provide an in-depth assessment of a nanomaterials market that may also have significant implications for electronics and healthcare.
