Who: Los Alamos National Laboratory and the University of Milano-Bicocca.
What: Large-area luminescent solar concentrators based on CdSe/CdS quantum dots with giant shells (giant quantum dots) with artificially induced large separation between emission and absorption bands (Stokes-shift). The luminescent solar concentrators yield optical efficiencies >10% and an effective concentration factor of 4.4. See “Large-area luminescent solar concentrators based on ‘Stokes-shift-engineered’ nano- crystals in a mass-polymerized PMMA matrix”
Where: Luminescent solar concentrators as alternatives to semiconductor photovoltaics. Standard house windows would double as solar panels.
When: Nanomaterials-enhanced solar cells are already available, however efficiency levels and cost for widescale application are a hindrance.
